This is part 1 of my Series in ‘A Systematic Problem Solving Approach‘
Step 1 – Define the Problem: Unveiling the Enigma
1. What is the problem?
Before diving into solutions, it’s crucial to articulate the problem clearly. Imagine you’re telling a story—what’s the challenge that needs a resolution? This is your opportunity to give the problem a face, a name, and an identity.
2. How did you discover the problem?
Problems have a sneaky way of hiding in plain sight. Share the detective work behind uncovering the issue. Was it a sudden realization, a customer complaint, or a gradual awareness within the team? Understanding the discovery process sheds light on the problem’s nuances.
3. When did the problem start and how long has this problem been going on?
Timing is everything. Pinpoint when the issue first reared its head and consider its longevity. Is it a persistent headache or a recent hiccup? Knowing the timeline provides context for devising effective solutions.
4. Is there enough data available to contain the problem and prevent it from getting passed to the next process step? If yes, contain the problem.
Data is your ally. Assess whether you have the necessary information to put a temporary fence around the problem. Containment is like stopping a leak before fixing the pipe—buying time while ensuring the issue doesn’t spread.
